Oil Prices, Horse Rescue, Horse Owners and Horse Slaughter

Blau_014-1
Horses have a history in the oil industry

Horses have always helped man-kind achieve their goals, from exploration of new lands to transportation and todays sport horse industry, so why today are breeders allowed to over breed these iconic and sentient beings? Greed, arrogance, ignorance, and a major lack of empathy and respect. So how can the current dip in oil prices help the horses?

When the cost to both produce and transport hay and grain products is greatly reduced by falling oil prices

, owning horses becomes more affordable, helping horse owners hang on to their furry friends. These lower costs of feed also keeps horses from being sent to horse auctions where the predatory industry of Kill Buying exists, this “Kill Buyer” industry serves only to line the pockets of foreign interests and a very small hand full of US citizens.

So why are Americas horses being sacrificed to foreign interests? The fact is that most, (80% of Americans) do not want horses sold to slaughter. As a whole, horse lovers are just not involved enough to bring an end to horse slaughter.  So how do we make our 80% voice heard, we go to those that profit from the equine industry and demand that they take a stand for horses.

The SAFE ACT is an old bill designed to end the transport of horses for slaughter in the United States, if the new bill passes horses will have support from the entire equine industry, the bill would pass and horses would be safe in the Unites States. Who is it that should step up and fight the legislative process and protect horses? All those that profit/benefit from the equine industry.

Healthy Herbal Horse Herd “HHHH”

Zuma's Medicine
Zuma’s Medicine

Thanks to Tracy Vroom and the Apothecary Fairy in Kiowa Colorado HHHH is the newest acronym here at Zuma’s Rescue Ranch. Katie Dixon and I have been researching everything from immune boost to wormers and everything in-between to keep our herd happy and healthy. Today’s blend was a calming depression blend for weaning foals and moving horses to new herds. Tomorrow will be a ulcer blend for that nervous horse that weaves and or cribs….. We have has such tremendous success with our herd and these new healing and training modalities we have eliminated the need for annual vaccinations and quarterly wormers replaced with natural training methods and remedies from the earth.

The universe brings people and opportunities to your path that are  good life lessons, between the ROTH  horsemanship program with Anna Twinney, The Cranio Program with Tracy Vroom, the Herbalist program with the Garden Fairy Apothecary  and Suzanne Kayser, Barefoot Trimmer/Equine Podiatry, Zuma’s is on a wellness for horses trajectory without limits! So grateful for these amazing beings in my life , thank you all for crossing our paths. Look for our next addition to the group, Diowave Cold Laser and Vitalwear Cold/Hot Therapy system. Rehabilitating Rescue Horses, here at Zuma’s.

I am an animal rescuer~

This was one we saved~

I am an animal rescuer.

I have bought animal food with my last dime,

I have patted a mangy head with a bare hand.

I have hugged those that are vicious and afraid.

I have fallen in love a thousand times,

and I have cried into the fur of a lifeless body too

many times to count.

I am an animal rescuer.

My work is never done, my home is never quiet, my

wallet is always empty,

but my heart is always full.

Horse Whispering at Zuma’s~

Horse Whisperers

Maybe you saw the movie or read the book. These are extraordinary people for certain, but a fellow Zumateer (Katya) aptly said to me, “We are all horse whisperers.” I have observed Katya as she ground works horses and wished I had the “gift.”  She has kindly given me pointers and a short round penning lesson.  My interest was piqued, so when Diego came to Zuma’s with ground lessons, I eagerly joined his class.  Everything about my relationship with horses has changed.

Grooming and preparing my horse to ride was always a means to an end.  All I wanted was to get on and ride.  To be sure, I love the smell and feel of the barn and horses, but riding was the ultimate goal.  So much has changed since I have been introduced to ground training by Katya and Diego.  Connection and trust with these wonderful, powerful animals is amazing; and, we all can experience this from the ground.

As riders we learn our horse’s language, and we can detect the slightest change in demeanor from atop his/her back or by observing body cues from the ground.  Great.  Even better is the experience of teaching and working with the same horse on the ground.  Feeling the relationship with your horse change from detached boss/employee to trusted leader/partner is incomparable.

Now when I ride, my horse is more confident in me, as I am in her.  Ground lessons have brought about this change.  Seeing this same confidence in an inexperienced horseperson or child, who is timid and afraid with horses or in life, makes the statement even stronger. That which we learn on the ground with our horse transfers to our riding experience and to life relationships and behaviors.

We all can whisper to our horses.  Diego can teach you, too, whether you are a rider or not.  Make the connection and learn about relationships through a horse.
